Scenario
Tom Samuelson is the head of Student Services at "Your
School". After pushing hard to implement Student Online
on a campus-wide basis, Tom is now effectively utilizing
the platform to streamline his communication and organization.
Like all Student Online users, Tom starts his day by
checking his Homeroom for news and sports scores. From
there he moves to a private group set up for the directors
of individual student services, which he coordinates.
After posting an announcement regarding the next team
meeting, Tom checks the posted minutes from the last
meeting and replies to postings on the message board
regarding an ongoing discussion about budgetary concerns.
Next, Tom reviews plans for the spring concert. This
year half as many flyers have been printed and the phone
mail messages have been replaced by school-wide alerts
regarding the concert and a special group for students
to join who want to participate in staging the show.
On the concert group home page, Tom replies to postings
from interested students. Having recently assigned one
of his assistants to take charge of the concert preparations,
Tom then uses his administration module to delegate
security privileges to the new concert director.
From
there, Tom heads to the inter-campus hub for student
services administrators, where he has met an administrator
from a neighboring school looking to co-sponsor a lecture
series. Pleased with the friendship he has built up,
Tom posts a message asking for other administrators
interested in teaming up-his plan is to combine funds
from a series of area schools in order to book two nationally
renowned politicians. With lunchtime fast approaching,
Tom checks the dining services home page to see what's
being served in the campus Dining Hall. Unimpressed,
Tom accesses the local restaurant section and uses an
online order form to order from the local Chinese food
restaurant. Waiting for his lunch, Tom receives a high-priority
alert indicating that the newest provost candidate is
being interviewed and the forum is being simulcast live
via Student Online. Following a link to the simulcast,
Tom watches the presentation and finds time to instant
message a question during the remote Q&A, just as his
lunch arrives.
